I am exploring the action and surface of drawing and painting in my body of work. Through an analysis of the relationship between ink and paper, I discover different responses from their chemistry. Time, space, physicality, scale, and connection are considered and I drive off each of these elements to make a piece that celebrates the bond between ink and paper. Regardless of the mark’s size, I want to always consider the paper’s voice. Exploring different characteristics of the paper such as texture, weight, and deckled edges, I want to speak of the paper’s identity. When composing a painting, I keep in mind to have a balance between the mark and the paper.

I am also exploring “The Abouts of Drawing.” This is a title I gave to subjects that I honor from an artistic process. I collect pencil shavings, leftover tape, charcoal crumbs, dried ink, and lead dust from my drawings and paintings. The humility and delicacy of these remnants are celebrated by presentation and photography. I am also preserving the ephemeral nature such as the sounds of painting and drawing processes through audio recording and video. “The Abouts of Drawing” are parallel alongside my exploration with mark-making and paper.
